> AN UPDATE ON FR. PRASAD GONSALVES.......11TH March 2005 1610 hrs.

We have just heard from our legal team and some Jesuit colleagues who are in Patan, that the District Sessions Court of Patan has granted Fr. Prasad Gonsalves bail, on a surety of Rs., 10,000/-.

We are still awaiting the written Court Order and the other
conditioins of the bail.  It will then have to be rushed to
Radhanpur, where hopefully, before the closure of the courts, he will be allowed to walk out of jail.

Your prayers please, that he does not have to spend the next two
holidays still in jail.

> An update on Fr. Prasad Gonsalves
 10th March 2005   -     1710 hrs.

Today (10th March 2005) our bail application was introduced in the
Sessions Court of Patan.  We were hoping that we would get an
immediate hearing and that the order for bail would be given today
itself.  Unfortunately, Government Prosecutor on behalf of the
complainant (Shantaben)  wanted to introduce an affidavit denying    Fr. Prasad the bail (the precedence is the bail application of the
Shankarachaya of Kanchi).  Their prayer was that our appeal for bail
is not heard until Monday.  This latter part, because of our lawyers, was not accepted by the judge who agreed to do the hearing tomorrow.

That means, Fr. Prasad will still be in jail definitely for tonight,
and in all likelihood, even if we get an order tomorrow evening, he
may be there till Monday  (14th March) atleast.

Together with a Jesuit companion Fr. Dinesh, I was for most of the
day in Radhanpur.  We spent half an hour with Fr. Prasad.  He is in good spirits and rather cheerful.  He has sent to all, his warm greetings and gratitude and tells that he is just now "in the second week of his Ignatian Retreat".
This case may continue to be a major issue because our understanding
of the situation is that it is a very meticulously planned operation
and that important elements of the Sangh Parivar are involved.
However, there continues to be a ground swell of support for Fr.
Prasad.  Several women from the villages around, today gathered in
Radhanpur, to draft a memorandum in support of him, to the Governor
of Gujarat, with copies of it to be sent to all important people and
Commissions in the country.  The women had originally planned to take out a rally in Radhanpur today, but were denied permission by a Deputy Collector.  However, a bigger rally is being planned with the support of some other groups and organizations, some time next week.  As already mentioned yesterday, the rally against Fr. Prasad, organized by the Sangh Parivar, turned out to be a major flop.

We are also doing our best to contact important officials and groups
to ensure that there is pressure for his unconditional release.

Some local media (in Banaskantha District and in the Gujarati
language) has not been too favourable.  However, by and large, both
in the English and Gujarati Press, the reports on Fr. Prasad have been rather favourable.  We will continue to keep you informed.
Warm wishes and prayers,
Fr. Cedric Prakash sj
