| No sympathy wave for ex-CM Parrikar, BJP faces drubbing in local polls |

PANAJI, MARCH 15, 2005: Attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa to garner public sympathy following the sacking of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar failed today with the party facing a major defeat in the zilla panchayat elections.
Leads from all 50 seats in the state indicate that Congress nominees are ahead in as many as 45 seats with the BJP struggling to maintain a presence in the state.
In the Christian-dominated South Goa district, Congress nominees are leading in 15 of the 20 seats. The BJP is maintaining a presence only in the urban areas. But the biggest surprise for the party is in North Goa where the Congress nominees are leading in as many as 25 of the 30 seats. The BJP was expected to perform better because of the large number of Hindus here.
However, the BJP�s famed mobilisation machinery failed even though the turnout at the zilla panchayat polls was a low 50 per cent. Among the reasons being cited � political fatigue and the cashew harvest season.
The final results are expected in the next few days as ballot papers, not electronic voting machines, were used.
In some parts of Goa, including Taleigao and Cumbarjua, Congress nominees were elected unopposed as the BJP could not find a single candidate to contest the elections. In these areas, entire party networks of the BJP had defected to the Congress in this month�s political upheaval.
The BJP had been counting on a sympathy wave, but observers had predicted denting of Parrikar�s clean image following the party�s attempts to remain in power despite losing the majority in the Assembly.
