AICU Homage to the Late Pope

In a press statement issued on April 8, the All India Catholic Union (AICU) has paid special homage to Pope John Paul II. They have called the late Pope  a Nurturing Father, a Charismatic Role Model to all People. They salute John Paul II, celebrate his Life's testimony.

AICU a registered body founded in 1919 and it represents the Catholic Laity of India through 120 Diocesan, units nation-wide.  John Dayal is the National President, Dolphy D'Souza  the Vice President, Elias Vas the Secretary General and Eugene Gonsalves  the Treasurer.  Mr John Dayal who is a senior journalist and Civil Society activist is also a National Integration Council member of Indian government.

The press statement released by him says. "As Kings, Presidents and Heads of Government pay the world's homage to the Late Pope John Pail II as he laid to rest in the Crypts of the Vatican today, the President, Office Bearers and Members salute the memory and cherish the legacy of a Nurturing Father of the Catholic Laity, and a charismatic role model of all people, specially of the young."

"Born and brought up in the darkest periods of the Twentieth Century, Karol Wyotla experienced life under tyranny of the Nazis and Stalinist regimes, his uncrushable spirit and unconquerable faith marked his Papacy with a historic courage that decried War, and challenged dictatorships, bigotry and human exploitation. Of this was his legacy to the 21st Century, a legacy of Concern for the Poor. His Love for the unborn Child, his commitment to Human Dignity, his faith in the New Generation, his example of Forgiveness, his call for Evangelization, and his insistence for continuing dialogues between religions and cultures. His landmark ecumenical dialogues with Christian denominations, his warm contacts with Jews and the Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh religious leaders have laid the foundation of fruitful co-existence centered on the Dignity of Man and his Freedom."

"Catholics in India will remember him for his solidarity with all the Rites. He strongly supported the heritage of the Oriental Churches, and his elevation of the heads of the Syro Malabar and Syro Malankara Churches will be remembered with gratitude. India will also remember him for his unique friendship with Mother Teresa and his Beatification of hr Saint of Calcutta."

The Catholic Union, which cherishes memories of his two visits to India in 1986 and 1999 in which many AICU leaders were involved, particularly honours Pope John Paul II foe his commitment to the Laity and in losing no occasion to remind the common Catholic men, women and youth of the empowerment that was theirs through the Second Vatican Council further comments that "Even In his long struggle against disease and in the final days of his Life, John Paul II taught us how to live and die with dignity, anticipating with joy and serenity the moment of meeting God the father. The All India Catholic Union commits itself to all that he taught us."
