'Pomburpa needed only for polls, garbage site'
A HERALD REPORT BY MELVYN MISQUITA & ANIL SHANKHWALKAR 8 April 2005 Located along the banks of the Mandovi river, Pomburpa village is a far cry from any notions of development. With its annual income at about Rs 40,000, Pomburpa panchayat can barely purchase a motorcycle, let alone envisage a lofty project in the village. And its geographic location offers little assistance to augment its cash-strapped coffers. Pomburpa does not own any part of the lucrative land at Porvorim plateau, half of which is claimed by its neighbours, Penha-da-Franca, Salvador-do-Mundo and Socorro. "Good projects never come to Pomburpa. In fact, Pomburpa is considered important only during elections, and when it comes to chosing a garbage dumping site," sums up a disappointed Gokuldas Halarnkar, who heads the seven-member Pomburpa panchayat.
