Panaji April 9, 2005: Gudi Padva, the new year day of the Hindu calendar was celebrated in the state today, with joy and exuberance.
In addition to the household celebrations, a number of public and community functions were also held around the city and other towns including Margao and Mapusa.
Gudi Padva was celebrated in the city by special early morning prayers at the Mahalaxmi temple, here and a procession leading to the Azad Maidan, which culminated into a lecture on festivals by the well-known humorist, Mr Da Ma Mirasdar.
Mapusa witnessed a number of processions beginning at dawn from different parts such as Sateri temple, Khorlim, Dattawadi, Ansabhat and Ganeshpuri carrying saffron flags and mashals or torches, accompanied by lezims and dindi and merging near the Maruti temple.
Fireworks were also displayed on the occasion. Later, a cultural programme was held at the Mapusa taxi stand, followed by a special talk on �Religion, Science and Culture� by the former vice-chancellor of Marathwada University, Prof Shivajirao Bhonsle.
Meanwhile, gudis consisting of a wooden pole covered with new silk cloth a brass or silver vessel -kalash - upturned above it were raised in the courtyards or over the roof-tops. The people also visited temples and prayed for a successful new year.
The festival also saw inauguration of new ventures and important purchases, including those of gold and silver.
The members of various communities participated in the Gudi Padva celebrations and wished a prosperous new year for their Hindu friends and colleagues.
