Invited for Pope's ceremony, but...

Had fate not willed otherwise, Mahim-based couple, Captain Mervin Lobo and his wife Margaret, wouldve been among the millions witnessing the installation ceremony of Pope Benedict XVI yesterday.

Invited by Cardinal Simon Lourduswamy, in-charge of Eastern Rites at the Vatican, the couple, probably the only one in India to be invited, could not attend as all flights to Rome were full.  But despite their disappointment, the couple was still in high spirits. A visibly excited Lobo said, There are bigger things on the horizon! Cardinal Lourduswamy has promised us a private audience with the Holy See.

Sadly, the couple did have air tickets for April 27, for attending the ceremony, when they received the invite by the Cardinal. It was only when the ceremony was moved from the end of the month to Sunday, that their hopes were dashed.  We were not able to secure tickets within this short notice, said Margaret Lobo.

A Master Mariner with the Merchant Navy, Lobo is no stranger to the new Pope. I had read about Cardinal Ratzinger and wanted to meet him personally and I did in January 2000. I even wrote him regularly from August 1999, said Lobo.
One of my prized possessions is a copy of Joseph Ratzingers Milestones: Memoirs 1927-77, which he presented to me. The cardinal has also sent us a host of greeting cards on several occasions, he added.

Lobo has been a regular visitor to Rome and has gone on pilgrimage to almost every important holy site in Christendom. He has also studied the sacred scriptures for a while, in Jerusalem in 2000.

Besides, our wedding was solemnised in the Holy Sepulchre church in Jerusalem in 1988 and we were blessed by the late Pope John Paul II, points out Margaret.  The Lobos even have in their proud possession, precious relics of several saints.  The couple will now leave for Rome on April 27 for an audience with the Pope.
