Club's beauty pageant goes international By VINITHA VISWANATH WOMEN of all nationalities living in all six GCC countries are being invited to enter the May Queen 2005 beauty contest. It is organised every year in Bahrain by the Indian Club, but this is the first time it will be an international event.
"Over the years women aged 15 to 30, of various nationalities, have competed for the coveted crown of May Queen," said general secretary Ulhas Karnavar. "But due to the tremendous attention this event has gained we decided to open it to ladies of all nationalities throughout the GCC for the first time." The event will take place over two nights next month at the Indian Club, in Manama. It will commence with an Exclusive Members or Sponsors Nite on May 12, which will be judged by club members only. Participants will perform onstage for members from 8pm. "The first night will be judged by members, who will vote for the Members Queen and the results will be declared during the finale," said Mr Karnavar. "But this will not affect the final contest." The main event will take place on May 19 at the same venue and will be judged by leading members of the community. It will feature the crowning of the Indian Club May Queen, as well as a presentation for the first and second runner-up. Other categories will be Best Hair Do, Best Smile and Perfect 10. The event on May 19 starts at 7.30pm. Winners will walk away with cash prizes, electronic items and gift hampers. Local band Sheer Magic will entertain the crowd and the evening also includes ballroom dancing for members and guests. Women interested in taking part should obtain entry forms from the Indian Club reception. Choreographer Alberto Gayo will direct the event and contestants will start grooming sessions from April 30.
