The KONKAN FRUIT FEST is being held in Panaji city on the traditional "first weekend of May" for the third consecutive year. It is a matter of immense satisfaction to see Government agencies ,non-government organizations ,entrepreneurs and the common citizens working together to promote the fruit crops, their cultivation, processing and marketing along with the technologies to do so scientifically and profitably. The 3rd KONKAN FRUIT FEST has gone beyond just mangoes and Garcinia [ Bhirand or Kokum] has grabbed centre-stage.
The fresh fruit entries for the competition were judged by a panel of three judges on the eve of the festival. The panel consisted of Mr.Sanjeev Kadkade, Head of Dept, Institute of Hotel Management[ GoI]-Porvorim, Mr. Alphonse Pereira, Principal of Fr. Agnelo�s , Institute of Hotel Management and Ms. Rena Fernandes, Agriculture Officer and Treasurer of Botanical Society of Goa.
Out of the 114 entries, Mr. Shrihari Kurade of Cuncolim-Salcete basketed seven prizes. Mr.Balaji Naik, Mr. Mukund Borkar[ both of Ponda] and Mr.Shailesh Prabhudesai of Margao bagged two prizes each. Other prize winning entries were from Mr.Carlos Figueiredo of Santerxeth-Aldona, Ms. Nirmala R.Khandeparkar of Bordem-Bicholim, , Ms.Lorraine De Sa of Tivim-Bardez, Mr. Prakash Kund of Cuncolim Ms. Nilam Moye of Margao, Mr.Narayan Mandrekar, Mr.Devidas T.Pednekar, Ashok Savaikar, Sandesh G.Sawant, Mr. Madhukar S.Walavalkar and Daulatrao Rane[ all six of Bicholim], and Don Bosco
Farm, Sulcorna- Quepem.
The prizes will be given away by the Chief Secretary on the last day. The KONKAN FRUIT FEST goes on till Sunday 08 May, 2005 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. with competitions everyday.
