Mangalore, May 18, 2005: The whole house is engulfed in gloom. 'Ashok Bagh' on the Ashoknagar Road leading from Urwa Stores, otherwise certainly giving the look of an abode of warmth and happiness, had in its living room only the light of two candles lit beside a portrait of Krithi Moraes, nee Pereira, married to Ashok Moraes only less than five months ago.
Krithi is just a memory for the family
From the information we gathered from the family members, Krithi, true to her name, was a rare creation, a bundle of talents, bubbling with youth. She did her high school at St Mary's and graduation at St Agnes. She was skilled in swimming and adept at painting. She also did a post-graduate Diploma and Business Management at St Aloysius later.
On that happy day, December 29, 2004 - Krithi and Ashok
During her short stint as the front office executive with 'Udayavani' for about six months, Krithi made a real mark in the office. Ramachandra Mijar, Head, Media Marketing at Udayavani office in Mangalore, speaking exclusively to Daijiworld, recalled her simple and innocent nature, quite uncharacteristic of a girl with an affluent background. She was capable of handling any difficult situation in the office, he continued, saying with a sad voice that if only she had continued with Udayavani, she would have lived a long life. As soon as she got married, she had to leave the job to join her husband. All the staff at Udayavani would miss her always, he concluded.
Ashok's sister Amita, from Saudi Arabia, narrating her short-lived family relationship with Krithi, with Krithi's grieving brother Kirthan in the foreground
Her brother Kirthan, who was present, recalled that she had written some write-ups for Udayavani, especially around Christmas. Krithi was the only sister to Kirthan and Karthik, born between them. They are too dumb-struck for words.
Krithi's father, Wilfred, shock-stricken, yet a tower of strength
Her father Wilfred Pereira of Ocean Builders, Vas Lane, Kankanady, speaking to Daijiworld, said she had a great liking for travel and adventure and obviously she was in great spirits while sailing away with Ashok a short while after their marriage.
Ashok is the youngest of the five, after Arun, Amita, Arjun and Ashrita, in the Moraes family. He has been a chief officer in a shipping line. Soon after his studies, sometime in 1994, he had joined the shipping industry. Ashok's sister Amita, married to Royston Sequeira Prabhu from Bijai and who just rushed from Saudi Arabia earlier during the day, grievingly recalled her short association with her young sister-in-law. Krithi had called her up in Saudi Arabia only a few days before her final call.

While on sail near the Bahamas, Krithi fell ill. After being given initial treatment at the Bahamas where she was put under artificial respiration, she was flown into Florida. The family sources said that contrary to the reports around about jaundice or malaria, it was neither. The medical report says she suffered from an internal complication, which is said to be the only third such case reported in the whole of US. It could have happened to her even on the coast, they said. She did not respond to the medication. Her end came on the much dreaded and much abhorred day - Friday the 13th - at Florida at round 7-05 am local time. The news reached back home around 4-45 pm IST, says Kirthan.
Draped in immaculate wedding sari ('saddo')
More and accurate details would be available only after Ashok would arrive with her mortal remains after a few days, say the family members, finding it too difficult to control their emotions.
Ashok and Krithi, who walked up the aisle of the Urwa Church on that beautiful day on December 29, 2004, never thought that it would be a short story of marital bliss. May both families be blessed with courage and equanimity to sustain this shock and may her beautiful, young soul be rewarded with eternal peace.
The condolence messages pouring in large numbers at both Pereira and Moraes households, as well as at Daijiworld office here, from people all over the world, from people known and unknown, should assure them that there are thousands worldwide feeling for them and sharing their sorrow with prayers, which alone should serve as a comforting thought for the grieving families at this moment of shock and agony.
