Renew efforts to make Goa stronger: Jamir NT Staff Reporter Panaji May 29, 2005: The 18th Goa Statehood Day will be celebrated tomorrow and the Governor, Mr S C Jamir has extended warm greetings to the people of Goa on the occasion.
In his message, Mr Jamir said: "I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Goa on this historic and happy occasion of Statehood Day." "On this day in 1987, Goa attained statehood and became the 25th state of the Indian Union. Attainment of statehood brought not only a distinct and long-cherished identity to the state, but also greater responsibility to the people to run the affairs of their state according to their own genius. This is an appropriate occasion for all of us to assess the achievements made so far, and to renew the efforts to make Goa a stronger and more prosperous state in every respect in keeping with the modern trends of life," he said. "The people of Goa have many significant achievements to their credit. Although the territory was liberated 14 years after the rest of the nation became independent, Goa has made spectacular progress in every field of human activity during the last four decades and is a front-ranking state in the country. The people of Goa stand as a shining example of peaceful living, unity and social harmony. This rich tradition should be preserved, for which the contribution of every citizen is important," the Governor said further. "Goa is gifted with abundant resources, both human and material. There are areas where we need to make improvements. Goa should increase its agricultural output and become self-sufficient in agricultural products sooner than later," Mr Jamir said. "People's involvement and cooperation will play an important role in bringing down crimes, which is a matter of some concern. Though Goa is comparatively a peaceful place, we need to be cautious," he also said. "Preservation of peace and tranquillity and prevention of crimes should be the common concern of all sections of the society. In keeping with the emerging international scenario of economic progress, we should adopt a rational and scientific outlook in matters of education, health, sanitation, environment, etc. Protection of natural environment should be the concern of one and all," Mr Jamir said. "Every effort should be made to promote tourism, which is an important industry providing considerable employment and economic opportunities. Determined efforts should be made on priority to create ample opportunities for the educated unemployed youths of the state. At the same time our younger generation should take up self- employment ventures, for which plenty of opportunities are available today. In building an egalitarian society, we have to sometimes subordinate personal interests and group loyalties to strength the moral fibre and values of the society. If we put forth sincere and determined efforts we can overcome all differences and problems which impede progress," he said. "Statehood Day is an appropriate occasion for us to rededicate ourselves to bring about greater peace and prosperity to the state. I appeal to the people to work with renewed determination and earnestness to make Goa a more beautiful, peaceful and prosperous land," the Governor said in his statement. ------------------------ Yahoo!
