PM on three-day Goa visit from June 17

NT Staff Reporter

H.E. Dr. Manmohan Singh,

Panaji June 13: Coinciding with the proposed visit of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh to Goa between June 17 to 19, the state government is planning the laying of a foundation stone of the centrally-sponsored convention centre, by the Prime Minister, at Dona Paula.

This was decided at the first cabinet meeting of the newly installed Congress-led United Legislature Party (ULP) government headed by Mr Pratapsingh Rane held at Secretariat conference hall, here.

All the cabinet ministers, including the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Wilfred de Souza, who had earlier announced that he would not attend his office till his party MLA, Mr Francisco Xavier Pacheco was inducted into the cabinet, also attended the meeting.

Briefing reporters here this evening, the Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane said the cabinet had informally finalised the programme over the proposed visit of Dr Singh to Goa. He said he called on Dr Singh during his recent visit to New Delhi and extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Goa on the occasion of Revolution Day on June 18.

Though a final confirmation of the Prime Ministers visit is awaited, Mr Rane said the government has finalised Dr Singhs programme. Besides addressing the freedom fighters, the Prime Minister would also visit the martyrs memorial at Patradevi and see the progress the renovation work there, he said.

Besides, the Prime Minister is expected to address the officials of the state government and also visit the National Institute of Oceanography at Dona Paula.

It may be recalled that the central government had proposed to set up three convention centres in the country, of which one was allocated to Goa. Though, initially the central government had proposed a big-size convention centre to Goa but last year the central government wrote a letter to the state government saying that Goa would be allocated a minimum-size convention centre.

Mr Rane said the convention centre was meant for holding the national and international conferences and that this centre would give big boost to conference tourism.

Replying to a question, Mr Rane said that since Goa has a natural harbour the need of the hour was to have proper connectivity to the harbour and proposed airport. Once the four-lane projects get completed, Mr Rane said proper connectivity will be established thereby the present problems cropping up would be solved. Mr Rane said his government would study the issue of raising the finances for some of the projects.
