Panaji June 17, 2005: The Governor Mr S C Jamir has extended his warm greetings to the people of Goa on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day tomorrow.
In his message, Mr Jamir said: ?18 June is a red-letter day in the history of Goa, for it was on this day in 1946 that a mass peaceful movement was started by the people for the liberation of Goa from colonial rule.?
?In the subsequent years, this movement gained momentum, and the determined and untiring efforts made by our freedom fighters ultimately paved the way for the liberation of Goa in 1961. Today is thus an appropriate day for all of us to remember the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and to renew our pledge to not only protect the hard earned freedom but also to improve the quality of life of all sections of the people,? he said further.
?I have great pleasure in joining the people in paying my respectful tributes to all those valiant freedom fighters who strove so gallantly for the freedom of Goa this most beautiful and peaceful part of our motherland,? Mr Jamir.
?I also appeal to the people of Goa to work hard with a sense of unity, patriotism, brotherhood and mutual respect and understanding, inorder to achieve greater peace and progress,? the Governor said.
In his message, the Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane said freedom struggle of Goa which culminated in the liberation of the state was preceded by a continuous and spontaneous resistance by the people from the days they had come under the colonial rule.
Mr Rane said, 18th June which is celebrated as ?Goa Kranti Din? recollects the saga off the struggle of the Goans for legitimate aspirations of freedom.
The hard-earned freedom and the national self-respect which we had secured back and zealously guarded, has however brought with it new responsibilities such as efforts to wipe out poverty, ignorance and improve standards of living to make Goa a model state. We, in the government, value and respect the feelings of freedom fighters as we attained freedom only due to their relentless and selfless efforts. We continue to take inspiration from their glorious struggle while governing the state with a view to reach the desired goal of good governance and all-around progress of the state, he said further.
He said: ?As the head of the government, I pay homage to the memory of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia one of the foremost social and nationalist leaders of India who kindled the torch of freedom of Goa and inspired generations in Goa for times to come.?
The Goa Revolution Day will be celebrated at the historic Azad Maidan at Panaji and on this occasion 51 freedom fighters would be felicitated for their relentless work for the cause of freedom of Goa from colonial rule.
The Governor, Mr S C Jamir and the Chief Minister Mr Pratapsingh Rane lead the state in paying tributes to the memory of the martyrs at martyrs memorial and speak to the state at 8.45 a.m tomorrow.
