BY HERALD R EPORTER
PANJIM, JULY 4 A police sub-inspector (PSI) attached to the Panjim police station was grievously stabbed with a knife resulting in a five-inch wound in the abdomen by a suspected thief in an encounter near Bal Bhavan, Miramar, last night.
PSI Pravin Pawar underwent an operation at the Goa Medical College Hospital today and is stated to be out of danger, the police said. The knife missed piercing through his kidney, an officer disclosed.
The incident occurred late last night when PSI Pawar, head constable Prakash Satardekar and driver Rupesh Manderakar were returning from Dona Paula in the police jeep. They had gone from the Panjim police station to collect an accused in a case from the Dona Paula outpost.
On the D B Road, Pawar saw someone moving in a suspicious manner and stopped the vehicle. Seeing the police jeep, a well-built man in his late 30s, wearing a cream-coloured T-shirt and black pants, began to run towards the back-side of Bal Bhavan.
Quite sure of him to be a thief, the three led by Pawar decided to chase the suspicious character. In an incident replicating a scene from a Hindi movie, the three went in three different directions to encircle the suspected thief. Seeing Satardekar, he tried to escape from his side but this pushed him to go the other side which led to an encounter with PSI Pawar. Going straight for him, Pawar caught him and tried to put him down. At this juncture, the suspected thief in a swift action stabbed the PSI in his abdomen with a sharp knife before fleeing under the cover of darkness.
With the knife in his abdomen, Pawar who showed his determination to fight though elements, could not see his colleagues in the
dark. Besides, the overgrowth of bushes and soggy land had made the matters worse for their operation.
Pawar then whistled to call the head constable and the driver. The two went running in the direction they heard the whistle thinking that the PSI had apprehended the man they had been chasing in difficult conditions, sources said. But, they were in for a rude shock to see the PSI in a pool of blood. With knife in the abdomen, Pawar was shifted in a serious condition to the GMC, Bambolim where an ultrasound was done.
When the message was flashed to the senior police officers, a nakabandhi was carried out throughout the night but they could not get the assailant. Some 8-10 persons, as usual, were rounded up and later released.
Fortunately for him, there was no injury to his organs. He has a 5-inch stabbing wound and is under treatment, officials said.
