Two crosses in Ponda vandalised
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
PONDA, JULY 14, 2005 - In a shocking incident, miscreants desecrated two crosses at Tisk and Daag in Ponda in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Incidentally, the cross at Tisk has been vandalised for the second time in recent times.
Locals at Tisk-Ponda informed Herald that they had seen the cross intact on Wednesday around midnight, but were shocked to see it damaged by Thursday morning. This cross belongs to the Mount Carmel chapel at Ponda, while the cross at Daag-Ponda is in a private property.
While the cross at Tisk was partially damaged, the cross at Daag was totally destroyed.
Ponda police rushed to the sites on hearing the news of the desecration of the two crosses. Police suspect that the two crosses were desecrated by
the same group of miscreants. Investigations into the two incidents are in progress.
Fr Dharma Fernando of Mount Carmel Chapel stated that the miscreants had desecrated the crosses only to disrupt the harmony in Ponda.
This intention should be defeated by the people of Ponda, said Fr Fernando and he hoped that such incidents would not occur in future.
When contacted, church authorities at Panjim expressed concern over the desecration of the two crosses at Ponda.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik expressed shock on hearing the incident. The intention of the culprits is to disrupt peace and harmony among the different communities, he said. I appeal to the people of Ponda to maintain peace, which has been prevailing for so many years.
Mr Naik also informed that the matter was discussed with CM Pratapsing Rane, and added that he (Ravi Naik) had spoken to senior police officials in Ponda to tighten investigations in the incidents.
Former Ponda Municipal Council deputy
chairperson Irwin Soares claimed that Ponda police should be blamed for the incident, as the police failed to nab the culprits involved in the earlier incident.
Irwin Soares, who lodged the complaint on behalf of Mount Carmel Chapel, stated that the cross at Tisk had been desecrated for the second time in about two years.
Ponda police is yet to nab the culprits in the previous desecration incident, said Mr Soares.
Ponda BJP chief Sunil Dessai also condemned the desecrations.
Incidentally, a cross had been desecrated at Opa in Ponda taluka a month ago and a complaint had been lodged with Ponda police in the matter.
