Margao July 20: The annual Gulab Awards were presented at a function held at Margao this evening in the presence of a large number of Konkani lovers, priests and others.
Remembering the late Fr Freddy da Costa, who was instrumental in establishing the awards in 1983, the Industries Minister, Mr Luizinho Faleiro said that it gave him a good feeling to see that the late Fr Freddys dream of giving away the awards was still being carried on, even after his death.
Fathers life was an open book and was dedicated to Goa and Goans only, Mr Faleiro observed adding that the late Fr Freddys brother, Mr Fausto DCosta and other family members took interest in running the show till now.
Tiatrist Anil Kumar, who won the Best Tiatrist Award for Portueguese Goenkar opined that there was an urgent need for the state government to also think of doing more for tiatr.
The government should also have an award function on the lines of Gulab, he opined.
Anil Kumar viewed the award as an appreciation of his performance by tiatr lovers.
The Best Actress Award went to Rosy Alvares for Sangat Ami Burgi Konachi, while the Gulab Man of the Year Award went to All-India Football Federations general secretary, Mr Alberto Colaco.
His award was received by his son. The Gulab Best Sportsmen of the Year Award was bagged by Clifford Miranda of Dempo Sports Club and the Best Director Award went to Prince Jacob.
The South Goa MP, Mr Churchill Alemao speaking on the occasion felt that it was indeed great on the part of Mr Fausto DCosta and his mother, Ms Serafin D Costa to hand over the New Age Printing Press that was started by the late Fr Freddy to the Archdioscese.
The Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Wilfred de Souza felicitated noted Konkani writer, Mr Uday Bhemre, tiatrist, Anthony D Souza and tiatrist-cum-writer, Bazilio Soares Kalapurkar for their contribution to the various fields on the occasion. They were presented with a shawl and a citation.
Handing over the keys of New Age Printers to its new administrator, Fr Arleen de Mello, Mr Fausto DCosta said that this occasion was a dream cum true for the late Fr Freddy, who died in a tragic road accident.
As Gulab celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, both the awards function as well as the anniversary celebrations will be held together.
A book titled Sachtiche Igorz by Fr Moreno DZouza and a VCD titled Nikita were also released during the function.
Other awards given away included Best Tiatr Writer, Mario Menezes; Best Male Singer, Lawry Travaso; Best Female Singer, Felcy; Best Romy Writer, John; Best Comedian, Agostinho and others.
