The Carmelite presence in Kuwait is an element that pertains vitally to the charismatic makeup of the Order - in its roots and its spirituality, in its Marian dimension and in its missionary zeal for service. 
  
The Vicariate Apostolic of Kuwait has been enriched since 1948 by the tradition of Carmelite spirituality, since the Holy See entrusted this territory to the Order of the Discalced Carmelites (O.C.D.) ... | History of the Vicariate | O.C.D. In 1948, the first Catholic church on Kuwait soil came into existence. The Carmelites dedicated this church to Mary under the title of "Our Lady of Arabia". To represent the Blessed Virgin under this title, a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was made. This beautiful, life-sized statue has a place of prominence in the main sanctuary of the  church in Ahmadi. On 16th July, Carmelites all over the world celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel with great solemnity. This date was chosen as the date traditionally associated with St. Simon Stock's vision of Mary. This feast remembers the protection of Mary while giving _expression_ to the Order's thanksgiving to her for what is the symbol of her great love for Carmelites -- the gift of the Holy Scapular and its special privileges ...| Picture of O.L. of Mt.  In 2001, The Carmelite Orders (ancient and reformed) celebrated the 750th anniversary of the bestowal of the Scapular. This great celebration helped us to reflect on Mary's gifts to Carmel and ponder their meaning for ourselves and for the Church today. It is also an opportunity for all Catholics to deepen their Marian spirituality and therefore to follow her, who is the "Star of Evangelization" ...

14 JULY 2005: APPOINTMENT OF NEW VICAR APOSTOLIC OF KUWAIT
His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has named Rev. Fr. Camillo Ballin, MCCJ, as new bishop for the Vicariate Apostolic of Kuwait. 
Fr. Ballin, 61, will take over as leader of the 158,500 Catholics of the Vicariate with the retirement of H.L. Bishop Francis Micallef, who has served since 1982. 
Born in Fontaniva, Italy, Fr. Ballin was ordained a priest as a religious of the Comboni Missionaries in 1969. After his ordination, he learned Arabic in Lebanon and Syria. From 1972 to 1979 he was a parish priest in Zamalek-El Cairo. 
From 1980 to 1989, he was delegation superior and provincial superior of his religious congregation. In 1989-2000 he was involved in the founding of the Institute for the Formation of Religion Teachers in Sudan. 
Since 2000, he has been director of the Dar Comboni Center of Arab and Islamic Studies in Cairo and professor in the inter-ritual major seminary. 
The Catholic Community in Kuwait extends its prayerful congratulations and warm welcome to Bishop-Elect Rev. Camillo Ballin.
