News -- Goa: Oil Slick in Cavelossim-Benaulim Coastal Belt Raises Alarm - CM, Dy CM Visit Spot |

Though the Goa pollution control board or state authorities have not raised any red alert over the spillage, the authorities are yet to find the origin of the leakage. Chief minister Pratapsingh Rane, deputy chief minister Dr Wilfred d'Souza and a host of politicians visited the Cavelossim to Benaulim beach belt which has literally turned black due to oil spillage. Dr D'Souza, addressing a press conference in the afternoon of Wednesday, confirmed that the black substance which has surfaced on the silver beaches is oil. He, however, could not pinpoint the source of leakage. On the other hand, Goa state pollution control board has initiated investigations into the kind of substance. Samples of the black substance were collected from beach on Wednesdy. The results would be out within couple of days. The black substance was initially noticed by the residents of the area who informed police. The Coast Guard was in the dark till late Tuesday. They, however, initiated search operations on Wednesday. Initially, it was felt that the substance was tar balls. The worst-affected was the Mobor beach the hub of star hotels as the silvery sands were turned black, as violent waves that lashed the shore continuously washed up the oily substance on to the beach. The site opposite a star hotel resembled a thick black oily substance, restricting the movement on the beach over a long stretch. In fact, the phenomenon took many a tourist aback, as their movements were confined landward side of the beach. When the black substance was noticed on Tuesday, the locals along with the hoteliers were seen clearing the tar balls, but the exercise was simply enormous. |
