Rich tributes paid to freedom fighter

HERALD CORRESPONDENT
PANJIM, AUG 1—
Paying rich tributes to Dr Jose Francisco Martins, his friends and well-wishers launched an organisation to undertake programmes to nurture the ideologies the veteran freedom fighter stood for. The announcement of the launch of the new organisation was made at a function held to commemorate Dr Marthins’ first death ananiversary at GCCI hall, here on Sunday. Former president of Goa Freedom fighters Association Vasant Molio presided over the function. Social worker and former Panjim councillor Mohan Deshprabhu explained the aims and objectives of the organisation and said it would work under the parent body -Dr Jose Francisco Martins Memorial Foundation. An attempt, he said ,woud be made to sow the seeds of thorougfulness, rationalism and values of life in the young people. Stating that Dr Martins was a reputed Congress party leader, Deshprabhu lamented that although the Congress party is existing, the ‘real Congress’ is not. He stressed that good and committed people need to be given an entry into politics. Former deputy speaker Shambubhau Bandekar said Dr Martins participated in several people’s movements while Dr Damodar Bhounsule said the veteran freedom fighters always stood for medical ethics. Another former deputy speaker Simon D’Souza said Dr Martins was a principled man. Former student leader Satish Sonak said that the sacrifices, works and ideals of Dr Martins and other freedom fighters should be inculcated among the young generation so that responsible citizens are created. Speakers extolled the life and vision of late Dr Martins and congratulated his son, Dr Sushrut Martins for carrying on his departed father’s legacy by commencing a trust and a socio-political organisation that would wage a battle against the ills of society. The Dr Jose Francisco Martins Trust that would be set up on 2,500 square metres of land donated by philanthropist Bismark Facho, would provide scholarships for needy students, besides also establish educational institutions for them, informed Dr S Martins. Dr Sushrut said the Dr Jose Francisco Martins Memoral Foundation would provide a platform to unify committed people to work towards cleaning Goan politics and would also vociferously voice the grievances of the people and work towards promoting communal harmony. He said any politican posing to be a social worker and indulging in rampant corrupton nepotism, should be shown the door and called for efforts to bring in socially-committeed people having missionary zeal to enter politics. Vasant Molio said Dr Martins was an inspiration to many youngsters to jump in the freedom movement and later also in the Congress party. He said a false picture is being portrayed about the Christians during the freedom struggle and informed that Christians took the lead on several occasions to revolt against the Portuguese. Ramnath Naik also spoke on the occasion. Prominent freedom fighters present fo the function were Vasant Karapurkar, Sharada Savoikar, Gurunath Kelekar, Kanta Ghatwal, Flaviano Dias. Among otehrs were Jayant Mulgaonkar, Kusum Tarcar and Sashikant Sardesai. Earlier, Umesh Mahambre welcomed while Mohan Deshprabhu proposed a vote of thanks.
