Phases of Rain

by Bicaji Ghanekar

IF one carefully observes the rain and analyses it. One will notice the various phases of rain during the entire monsoon season, just as there are different phases in the life of man, like childhood, teenage and adulthood.

An infant cries at birth. If the child doesn’t cry then the nurse or the doctor carrying out the delivery takes the new-born in hand with head down and pats the new-born on the back. Most of the times with this procedure the infant starts cries.

If the new-born does not cry it means that the child is dead. During the first showers of the season, referred to as ‘Toddvo Paus’ in Konkani, there is lightening and thunder which is equivalent to the cries in the new-born.

After some days, there is increase in rain speed. The same applies to a teenager. He starts driving and riding fast, without obeying the traffic rules and parents’ instructions. This is in July incase of rain.

Then in August, the rain is mixed with sunlight equivalent to adulthood. Finally in October there is again thundering and lightening and the rain says “bye” to appear in next season in June.

One important thing that must be remembered during these days is an umberalla or a raincoat. There is always the possibility to forgetting the umbrella especially when there is no rain. Most of my friends including myself have lost more than a couple of umbrallas in a single season.

Fortunately, we don’t forget ‘our better half’ which is like an umbrella during the rainy season. “Paus aslear sotri zai munxeak, paus naslear sotri konxak” when there is rain, men need umbrella, else it is left in the corner.

I recall my student days when I used to wear gumboots to college during the monsoon, if there was no rain on that day then it would become unbearable. Fortunately, gumboots have gone out of fashion except for some policemen or fire service staff. But now-a-days we see these gum-boots throughout the year when the road is repaired or hot-mixed.
