Cricketers: GoaÂ’s new export

When the going gets tough, the tough get going — abroad.
This seems to have been the predicament of a number of promising Goan cricketers who once earned a name by making it to the Ranji squad.
Unable to climb up the cricketing ladder to national and international fame, these frustrated Goan cricketers eventually left the shores and are now excelling in club teams abroad.
The exodus started in the early nineties, when many players from the Ranji team began to move to Gulf countries. Among them was Namdeo Fadte, the first player to register a Ranji century for Goa. Namdeo scored three centuries and one half-century, amassing 775 runs in 11 Ranji matches. Namdeo was also selected to the South Zone team for his superb performances, but ultimately made his way abroad.
He was soon followed by Sandip Dhuri, Vinod Korgaonkar, Satish Shinde, Dayanand Bangera and Jayesh Shetty.
All of them played for different clubs in the United Arab Emirates and were also employed in reputed companies. Jayesh Shetty returned to Goa, to help his family-owned business.
Satish Shinde was born at Khalkaranj in Maharashtra. He represented Panjim Gymkhana and found a place in the Goa Ranji squad. He scored three centuries and two half-centuries and amassed 791 runs altogether.
Goans did not have an opportunity to witness Dayanand BangeraÂ’s stylish wicket-keeping for long. The first generation Ranji players were followed by Sandesh Dhuri, a wicket-keeper who went to Muscat, while Sandesh Dessai a left arm spinner from MCC-Margao, Peter John Rodrigues and Avdhut Amonkar, both all-rounders, Abrar Khan and Nitin Kalekar, all left for Dubai.
Avdhut, Nitin and Peter were all at the peak of their careers, when they moved to the Gulf.
“I opted to go abroad because of job security. Here in Dubai, I have a secure job and I can also enjoy serious cricket. I have no interest to play for the Ranji squad in Goa anymore,” said Avdhut on phone from Dubai.
Ambey Parvatkar, another cricketer, is reported to be presently captaining a team ‘Yogi International’ in Dubai.
GoaÂ’s cricketers have also made a further leap to England. So far, English cricket has attracted four leading Ranji players from the state. Rajesh Naik, a former Ranji captain and all-rounder has been playing in England, since the past five seasons.
Shadab Jakati, a 24-year-old lad, has been representing a minor county in Leicestershire, since last season. His contract has been extended due to his performance last year and he will now represent Stog and Thumbry, a leading club.
He has 48 wickets and 315 runs to his name. In the Ranji matches, he scalped 49 wickets and scored 622 runs.
Pace bowler Avinash Aware was born in Nasik, Maharashtra and represented Goa in 19 Ranji matches and took 65 wickets. He took five wickets in an innings seven times. According to reports, he has also been doing well in England.
Rohit Rane, another cricketer, is also presently engaged in club duty in Scotland.
Admitting that talented Goan cricket players were being lured abroad, Secretary of Goa Cricket Association Chetan Desai however said these numbers “were negligible”.
“Playing cricket abroad helps them keep in touch with the game and they get experience playing with quality players of those countries,” remarked Mr Desai.
He also admitted there was no job security for Goan cricketers in Goa, but expressed hope that in future, players would get good job prospects.
According to Prashant Kakode, all-rounder and former Ranji Captain, “most players who leave the State do so largely because of job security.”
Kakode however dismissed claims that Goan cricketers stood to gain better exposure abroad.
“Premier league matches in the Gulf are below the standard of Goan premier leagues. Even those Goan cricketers who are in England play in the lower division leagues,” said Kakode.
He however agreed that there should be job security for Goan cricketers here in Goa. “Elsewhere in India, sponsors readily come forward to employ cricketers,” said Kakode.
