National carriers exploit Gulf passengers: Ahmed
DH News Service Thiruvanathapuram:
Tytler said he along with Mr Chandy would meet the Prime Minister this month to take up the issues of NRIs.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed has said that the airlines operating in the Gulf sector, especially the national carriers, were still continuing to exploit the passengers by charging high fares. He was speaking at a seminar on Saturday at Samavayam, the ongoing four-day global meet of non-resident Keralites, at Kazhakuttam near here .

Mr Ahmed said there was no justification for the high air fares being charged by the national carriers in the sector and he had been opposing this for long. Referring to voting rights for NRIs, Ahmed said that he favoured a constitutional amendment for enabling NRIs, who had Indian passports to vote from the Gulf itself.

Opening the meet on Friday evening, Overseas Indians Affairs Minister Jagdish Tytler said the issue of voting rights for expatriates would be taken up in Parliament and also with the Election Commission. “Non-resident Indians in Gulf countries will be allowed to vote in elections while they are in India. We have received a draft bill from Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for this and we immediately decided to accept it,” he said.

Mr Chandy said that at least 10 per cent of expatriate workers in the Gulf would be at home during any election. “They will be enrolled in the voters list along with the passport number and they would be able to vote by producing the passports,’’ he said.

Dual citizenship

Mr Tytler said the Union Cabinet had in principle decided to grant dual citizenship to all non-resident Indians. He pointed out that Parliament had passed a bill extending dual citizenship to people of Indian origin (PIOs) in all the countries instead of the 16 listed initially. Two children of a person granted dual citizenship would also get the same benefits.

The meeting, which was attended by representatives from the Gulf, United States, Europe and Singapore took up various issues concerned with the welfare of expatriates. These included voting rights and job security, single-window system for bringing dead bodies, security of expatriate families and contract employment in Gulf countries.
