Konkani Film "Padri" to hit the screens in September

After a long gap of nine years, a Konkani movie ‘Padri’ (Priest), based on a Goan play by the same title, is all set to hit the screens next month. The last Konkani film ‘Bogsane’ was released in 1995.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, film Director Rajesh Fernandes said the high budget (Rs 60 lakh) film was shot at 58 eye catching locations and webbed by seven scintillating songs with 46 actors performing in it. The entire coastal belt from Kasargod to Goa including Mangalore, Kumta and Honnavar have been kissed by the footprints of the film, he said and added that ‘Padri’ is a well knit story of reality touching the hearts of both old and the young.
It all began when he (Fernandes) along with Raymond Quadros (producer) during one of their visits to Goa watched the play ("Padri" by Prince Jacob). Soon a idea of making the film flashed.... rest is history. The unique aspect of the movie is that all the actors and actresses faced the camera for the first time. However, all of them are professional stage artists. The whole movie without even a single indoor shot, was shot in one go for 26 days. The story revolves round the life of a Catholic priest and values the true spirit of sacrifice. However, the film has been ingrained with all the daily chores and yores accompanied by dance and tragic scenes. “In all, it is a package to be viewed by the entire family with model clippings and modern anecdotes,” Mr Fernandes said. The censor board has given ‘U’ certificate without even a single cut, he added. To a query, he said the language used in the movie is a mixture of Mangalore and Goa Konkani.

The movie will be released in the second or third week of September in Mangalore, Bangalore, Karwar, Goa and Maharashtra. The director is also planning to send the film for Indian Panorama.

The lead role has been played by Newton D’Souza (from Goa) and Arona Fernandes (from Mangalore) while the lyrics have been scripted by Wilfy Rebimbus, music scored by Papan-Joswin, stunts by Tiger Madhu, cinematography by Elukoti Chandru and story-screenplay-dialogues by Prince Jacob. So far only 20 full script Konkani films have been produced including those from Mumbai, Goa and Mangalore. While 9 each have been produced in Karnataka and Goa, one each have been produced from Chennai and Mumbai.
Audio release today:
The audio cassette and CD of the film will be released during the 228th Wilfy Nite, a musical evening by the Film's lyricist Wilfy Rebimbus, at Don Bosco Hall on August 15th, 2005 at 6 pm. While industrialist Ronald Colaco will grace the occasion, St Joseph’s Seminary Rector Rev Fr Victor Machado will preside over the programme. Producer Raymond Quadros, actress Arona Fernandes, music director Joswin Pinto, singers Meena Rebimbus, Claud D’Souza, Mohammed Iqbal, Anitha Samson and comedian Dolla will be present.

PRODUCER - RAYMOND QUADROS

Raymond QuadrosProducer of 'Padri' Konkani films Raymond Quadros says the shooting of this film with the artistes and technicians of Karnataka and Goa was completed with a commercial touch. This cinemascope film consists of 46 artistes. The shooting was held in 58 beautiful locales of interior and outdoor.

Coming up from a very poor family in his childhood Raymond Quadros hails from Kinnigola near Mangalore. In search of job he moved to Mumbai as an electrician. With not much of scope with his job on hand Raymond Quadros to carve a better future proceeded to Dubai. In Dubai he became a cook of a Pakistani house. Not happy with it he came back to open a provision shop in Mumbai. Bad luck dodged him here also and he moved to Gulf for a better job. This time he showed interest in sale of electronic instruments. He became a contractor. He has started getting hold of profits and gave employment also for a few persons.

After nine colorful years he came back from Gulf to Bangalore. He started 'Sripadha' vegetarian hotel near Madivala check post. This became a turning point in his life. He started one after the other five hotels. In all these period he did not lose interest in Konkani literature. He evinced interest in making a film in Konkani language. He met Rajesh Fernandes accidentally and thus the evolution of the film took first round of talks. After a serious thought and a few rounds of discussion the film 'Padri' was decided.

This is a lavishly made film in one schedule says Raymond. There was no compromise and no worry bothered the entire team. For the first time thrills and actions are included in 'Padhri' Konkani film. It has been decided to release the film in Bangalore, Mangalore, Karwar, Goa and Maharashtra. This will be once again a record development from Konkani film 'Padri'.

DIRECTOR - N RAJESH FERNANDES D.F.A

Rajesh FernandesRajesh Fernandes is making debut from Konkani film 'Padri' as director. From 1991 he has been directing single episodes for Doordarshan as assistant director. He has a record of doing assistance for over 2000 episodes in which he has independently directed 1000 episodes. Prominent among them are Dharane, Mukthi, Streeshakthi, Preethi Madu Thamashe Nodu and Banna.

A native of Gundibala of Honnavara Taluk in Karawar district Rajesh Fernandes was interesting in the art field from the school age. He is a story writer. He has around 100 small stories. He has about 11 thrillers in his kitty. 'Andhkarothle Soorye' is a collection of stories in Konkani.

As a ghost director Fernandes worked for three films as director. If that is taken into account this Konkani film 'Padri' is his fourth film.

I have under gone tension in the beginning of direction. That's because all the artistes are new in the team. After two days of shooting the entire shooting schedule had some hiccups. He managed the trauma with will power. Most of the artistes are from the stage. Fernandes explained the difference between stage and films and convinced the artistes to get prepared in his style. Then the work went on very smooth and that is the result of completion of shooting in 25 days.
