Dear Dominic,
I thoroughly celebrated your piece and enjoyed reading it. It brought to mind two broad experiences: one of observing a mest in the early 70s at Batim* stichting some complicated dresses (I still remember the patterns) for the women in the family getting ready for my Padrins's wedding, and seeing my mother Otilia - a good seamstress stitch clothes in Mumbai. She took contract work for schools for a short while, but we - the children, did not have the intelligence to leave her alone. We demanded too much of her time, and she finally had to give it up. I have often wondered what would have been if she was had the opportunity to revel in her craft. Before she finally stopped, she was stiching wedding gowns. Anyway, is "angllim" a diminutive of angavostram or angostram. Is it a term used only for the clothes of infants? And is "canculaieo" a cap that covers the ears. Venantius * I am the grand nephew of the late Padre Alvaro Lodovico Figueiredo of Batim, formerly parish priest of Raibander who served at other places in Mangalore- I believe in Karwar, Dharwar, and Sirsi. He passed away at the clergy home in Alto Porvorim. _____________ ><http://www.goa-world.com/goa/index.html> http://www.goa-world.com > REFLECTIONS: NEEDLEWORK (Xivonn-suth) ! by Domnic Fernandes When God created man, He formed him from dust and breathed into his nostrils to bring him to life.
