Hundreds attend 'Sunset Rendezvous'
Organized under the theme "Sunset Rendezvous", the programme kick started with a concelebrated mass at 6pm. The mass was followed by an entertainment programme in which a total of nine groups took part.
At the end of the show people lunged forward to bid their final adieu to the emotionally charged bishop who expressed his gratitude for the appreciation showered upon him.
Born in Malta on Dec 17, 1928, Bishop Francis studied in Malta as well as in Rome. Ordained priest on May 9, 1954 and armed with Master's (Licenciate) in Theology, he returned to Malta to teach moral theology.
Upon his return to Malta he served as the Conventual, Prior (Superior) of the Monastery, Master of Novices and finally as the Provincial Superior of Maltese Discalced Carmelite Province.
Bishop Francis efforts were acclaimed by the Discalced Carmelite Order and the General chapter held in Rome in 1973, he was elected one of the Four Defenitors General.
Bishop Francis was later appointed as the Rector of the Carmelite International College (Teresianum) in Rome from 1979-81. Being given the responsibility to look after the Carmelite missions world over, he had the opportunity to get acquainted with missions all over the world including Kuwait.
Fr. Ballin, 61, the new Vicar Apostolic was born at Fontaniva, province of Padova, diocese of Vicenza, Italy, on June 24, 1944. He studied at Comboni semniaries at Padova, Brescia and Novara. He made his perpetual profession on Sept 9, 1968 and was ordained priest at Verona on March 30, 1969.
Fr. Ballin learnt Arabic in Syria and Lebanon following his ordination. Assigned to the delegation in Egypt, he started his appostolate in the Latin parish of St. Joseph, Zamalek-Cairo. Later he was apointed parish priest (1972-1979).
Among those who had a lot of praise for Micallef was the Vatican Ambassador to Kuwait Archbishop Giuseppe de Andrea.
