The Next IFFI - I

IT is for sure that international film festival of India will be once again held in Goa. The Centre has already sanctioned Rs 100 crores for this event. Last year some personalities made big speeches that considering the poor situation prevailing in Goa like lack of proper education, health care, drainage, garbage disposal, lack of sanitation in hospitals, power, water supply etc, these funds could have been utilised on priority towards development in these fields. Why are they mum now? You will agree that such big events make us enjoy only for a few days and mostly only the rich people enjoy it truly whereas, poor people mostly in rural areas, continue to struggle to even get basic necessities such as power and water. Due to such conditions, they cannot even enjoy their religious festivals. So I strongly feel that the Government should work towards welfare of these people on top priority. I am not against holding IFFI in Goa, but the Government should first think about it from the common man’s point of view.

The Next IFFI - II

THIS is with reference to the immense interest shown by our new Congress Government in organising IFFI again in Goa. It even went a step further by putting a condition on the Centre that it should hold IFFI permanently in Goa. What a shame! These very people were crying foul against holding IFFI when the BJP government was in power. One of the very vocal leaders even went to the extent of announcing that the IFFI will be dumped into the Mandovi. The Government could not even dump the garbage at the designated place, so how can we expect IFFI to be dumped into the Mandovi? They even made a big announcement that there would be an inquiry into the IFFI affairs but till today it has only remained a mere election gimmick. So how come the Government has become very enthusiastic about holding IFFI? We, the people are making ourselves look like fools when we silently listen to the leaders when they make big talks without substance. Allegations and counter allegations will continue and we will have to digest all these things as we have done so till today. Hypocrisy is the order of the day.

Half of IFFI expenditure recovered through taxes: Parikkar

PANAJI: The Goa government could recover half of the amount about Rs 7 crore spent in conducting the on-going international Film Festi- val of India (IFFI)  through levying taxes on hotel industry and intends to earn Rs 70 crore expenditure on infrastructure by leasing out the premises. Chief minister Manohar Parikkar said that over Rs three crore had been recovered through levy of 10 percent entertainment tax from the hotel industry and three percent sales tax on petrol and diesel. More than 6000 delegates, including those from abroad, participated in the festival. All the hotels were booked for the whole season, which meant further tax benefits for the state, he told reporters yesterday evening.

The chief minister said the government would consider a plan to give out on lease the infrastructure established for the IFFI on the basis of guidelines suggested by a UK-based consultant. He expressed the hope that Goa would be declared the permanent venue for IFFI. Efforts were on to strengthen the infrastructure further, including the construction of a permanent Theatre facility by 2006, Parikkar added.

He also said the state planned to conduct international film festivals and ''regional film festivals'' every year in view of the tremendous support to the  IFFI received from around the country, particularly from Maharashtra and Karnataka. Parikkar spoke of extending assistance to encourage production of good quality Konkani films. He said the film bazaar set up at the IFFI was not as successful as expected but observed that it was the beginning of a venture to promote film-trading. He said brand-building was essential to make the initiative successful.  United News of India / Dec. 10, 2004 (archived news by www.goa-world.com).

Stage Set for Film Festival

For the first time that the international film festival of India (IFFI) will begin with music, which is the core of Indian cinema. The 35th International film festival of India (IFFI) will open here on November 29 with a gala show of music and dance by AR Rahman, the two of the most important elements of Indian cinema. There will be live performances of famous dancer Isha Sharvani who will present her amazing rope dance. The idea was to present cinema in all its colour, sound and splendor. Presenting Indian music in all its grandeur will be AR Rahman whose music has transcended Indian boundaries and has become a rage worldwide. Rahman accompanied by a full orchestra comprising 60 musicians will present live his latest compositions from Kisna , a film by M. Subhash Ghai. Film star and Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner Dilip Kumar will inaugurate the IFFI  in the presence of Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. While the festival opens with Mira Nair's Vanity Fair, Oliver Stone's Alexander , one of the costliest Hollywood productions to date, will be the closing film at this year's International Film Festival of India (IFFI)  here.
