Churchill pleads for upgradation of Dabolim airport

Margao Aug 30, 2005: The South Goa Member of Parliament, Mr Churchill Alemao today pleaded for upgradation of the existing international airport at Dabolim.  Raising the issue in Lok Sabha as one of immediate public importance, Mr Alemao said that despite Goa’s pre-eminence in the tourism scenario, the state was still being taken for granted.

The South Goa MP felt that the first impression of tourists arriving in Goa was that it was a shabby place with the terminal building making matters worse. “The volume of traffic in Goa, given its popularity over the years, behoves that the state needs an international standard airport,” Mr Alemao said.  He further added that over the past few years the Airports Authority of India along with the elected governments of the day have looked around and scouted for a suitable site to create this much needed airport.  “However it is amazing to observe how logic has been set aside and the existing airport at Dabolim has not been given its due consideration in terms of location and proximity to South Goa, which is a preferred destination among tourists,” he said.

Mr Alemao felt that it was only natural to recommend the shifting of naval facilities at Dabolim to locations closer to the Western Naval Command headquarters or Project Sea Bird, an exclusive naval project.  “In turn the present facilities at Dabolim should be handed over to the Airport Authority of India to create the desired international standard airport for Goa.”

The MP who is also on the standing defence committee stated that many views and letters had been exchanged on the subject and several discussions had taken place on the merits and de-merits of the case.  “At a lesser cost an excellent facility can be created in an existing airport situation rather than in a new location,” he said.  Mr Alemao sought to know as why there was need for the present airport to shift to Mopa rather than improving and expanding the existing airport at Dabolim. “Skilled and semi-skilled workers from South Goa will have to face hardships if the airport is located at Mopa,” the MP felt.
