Monti Fest Celebrations by SMKC Dubai

Dubai, 11 Sept 2005: The feast of Blessed Virgin Mary also known as the Harvesting Feast and above all “Family Feast” holds a primary importance in the lives of Konkan people. Down the years many lovely customs and traditions have evolved around this feast like blessing of new corn, showering of flowers to our lady, mailing the new corn to family members living away from home. Reflecting a glimpse of what exactly happens back in India’s Konkan areas on the day of the feast of Blessed Virgin Mary; St. Mary’s Konkan Community celebrated the Monti Saibinechem Fest at St. Mary’s Church, Dubai today (9th September, 2005) with grand pomp and splendour.

A huge congregation of around 5000+ attended the concelebrated Holy Mass. The main church as well as the chapel was packed to capacity to celebrate the feast with many of the devotees standing out in hot sun and all this simply exhibited people’s devotion to our Mother. Ladies dressed in traditional sarees, men wearing suites, children and babes in the mother’s arms, all well dressed were hustling early morning hours to find a seat for them selves inside the Church all to venerate the Heavenly Mother and invoke her blessings on her birthday. It was the joyous moments for each and everyone to come together as one family.

The concelebrated Holy Mass began at sharp 10.00 am with altar boys leading the procession followed by a few children with basket of flowers, and the lay ministers carrying the sheaves of the paddy corns. Fr. Jossie Fernandes (Provincial of Karnataka Province, Bangalore) was the main celebrant, along with Fr. Harry D’souza, Fr. Cyprian D’souza, Fr. Anthony Lopez (Abu Dhabi), with a visiting priest as concelebrants. The entire Mass ceremony was conducted in a solemn manner.

The flower offering ceremony was conducted in front of the Grotto. The congregation was led in a procession. Small children with their enthusiasm and joy stood in lines carrying flowers and were walking towards the grotto singing with the melodiouschoir and crowd singing "Moriek Hogollsiam" and "Sokkodd Sangata Melleam" in Our Lady’s honour. The Arabian temperatures, though soaring high meant nothing at all with people standing in the hot sun waiting patiently till the end of the celebration.

Refreshments were served to the congregation. SMKC Yuva – the youth wing of SMKC Dubai won appreciation from everyone as they put in their best efforts to provide Sugar Canes to the congregation purely depicting the way that happens back in our hometown. SMKC newsletter Uzvad was distributed at the end of the Ceremony

The evening cultural program is yet to begin today evening at 7.00Pm in the main church followed by Novem Jevonn. Around 1800+ people are estimated to attend the evening program.

Hats off to SMKC DUBAI along with KONKAN YUVA team. In the morning too, SMKC Dubai created history to bring the munchy, juicy SUGAR CANES to the Oasis of this desert region (U.A.E. and other gulf states if not Oman) for the first time. Young and Old, children and adults grabbed the chance to take home the sugar canes and 500 pieces were sold like hot cakes during the morning heat after the High Mass in Konkani. Thanks to KONKAN YUVA group team.

Overall performance by SMKC YUVA was simply exhilarating and beyond expectations. It was indeed matchless Evening with extraordinary and lively performance by our own young crowd belonging to our Konkan world hailing from Mangalore and surrounding areas, Bangalore, Bombay & Goa too.
