The State Election Commission has declared elections to 137 wards in 11 municipal councils in the state. The elections will be held on October 23 and the votes will be counted on October 24.
The five-year term of previous councils of Pernem, Mapusa, Bicholim, Valpoi, Sanguem, Quepem, Margao, Mormugao, Canacona, Cuncolim and Curchorem-Cacora expires on October 24.
The order declaring schedule of elections will be published on September 26 and nominations will be accepted from that date by the mamlatdars of each taluka, who have been appointed as returning officers. The last date for filing nominations is October 4, 2005.
The nominations will be scrutinised on October 5 and 6 and the list of candidates published soon after the end of scrutiny. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 7 and the final list will be of contesting candidates will be published on October 8.
The ward wise strength of municipal councils are Pernem (10), Mapusa (15), Bicholim (10), Valpoi (10), Margao (20), Cuncolim (10), Quepem (10), Curchorem-Cacora (12), Sanguem (10), Mormugao (20) and Canacona (10).
