I had a rare opportunity to sing this soulful yet powerfully worded duet with the veteran singer and artiste of Konknni stage, Francis de Verna in the drama "Chuklelim Panvlam" staged by Mario de Majorda in Kuwait in June 2005.
Although I havent seen any stage performances from the King of Duets, late Mr. C. Alvares or Ms. Mohana on stage, Francis impressed me with his marvelous version recalling Alvares and Mohana sing this duet on Bhangwadi Stage. After the drama, many people complimented Francis yes, for some it was a nostalgic journey back to late 60's/ early 70's. Alvares' timeless gems aired on AIR Kandlam Onvllam and Manajogtim Gitam with Betty Ferns, Mohana, Ophelia and other yesteryear artistes, impressed, inspired, motivated, soothed and encouraged emancipation from issues challenging societal norms and taboos. My close friend, a newly married bride torn between a family feud and marital discord in Mid 70's remembered crossing two lanes to return back to her husband's house just as her father pushed the gramophone pin as Alvares repeated the last chorus of the duet "Sun" with Mohana. In this era of cheap remixes murdering the soul and character of dulpods, dekhnnis and golden yesteryear hits, it would a be formidable task to even attempt to recreate the magic of the legends. Compliments apart, Francis confided that it was a tribute to the legendaries he admired most; for me, in all humility, another milestone to be associated with the golden era of tiatr.
