The 21st annual athletic meet of the Ideal Indian School got off to a flying start at the school's floodlit grounds yesterday. As many as 500 enthusiastic athletes from the girls and junior wings competed in various events on the first day. School president Anwar Sheriff and council members joined the principal Abdul Wadood Khan and heads of wings in welcoming the guests and the parents. Rajinder Bhagat, charge d' affaires at the Indian Embassy was the chief guest on the occasion. He inaugurated the meet by releasing a bunch of colourful balloons. Speaking on the occasion, Bhagat hoped that the young athletes will win gold for India in the future Olympics. He urged the budding athletes to emulate the talented Indians like Sania Mirza, Anju Bobby George and Sachin Tendulkar. Achieve the best and try to be the best is my advice to the students, he said. the guest of honour. Previous year's champions Raksha Rajsekhar, Dianne Motha and Sharon D' Souza lit the ceremonial Olympic torch. Dipti Dodega, sports secretary in the girls wing, led the athletes in the oath-taking ceremony and pledged to take part in the meet in the true spirit of sport. Dr. Leelamma Joseph, vice-principal, girls wing welcomed the gathering and Lida Jasmin, physical education instructor proposed a vote of thanks. Results: Junior wing: I std: Flat Race: 25m: Boys: 1.
