Paul in another Junior row

MARGAO: Federation Cup last year was marred by the tragic death of Dempo's Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior, which involved Subrata Paul, Mohan Bagan goalkeeper. Paul has once again courted controversy regarding the incident.

It was reported by a Bengali daily that the gloveman, along with the assistant coach of the team Satyajit Chatterjee, visited the Dempo Club House located in Miramar, Goa, secretly to pay homage to the deceased.

According to a report in a local daily here, the visit was paid when Dempo were playing against HAL in the opening day of the tournament and there was nobody present at the club.

This infuriated the Dempo officials, who said that they were not asked permission by Mohun Bagan for such a visit. "How can they enter the Club House with out anybody's permission?" Armando Colaco, secretary and coach of Dempo, was quoted as saying. "If they had asked for permission, we would have gladly agreed. But what could be the meaning of this? Entering the club house when we are away is unethical."

A picture, which was carried by the Kolkata daily, showed Paul with red flowers in his hands with Chatterjee beside him, standing in front of a Cristiano Junior banner which read, "Junior, you will always remain in our hearts." The Bagan management was unavailable for comment.

Injury taking its toll

Injury on the ground is inevitable. But off it? And when you are doing little else, except gyrating to lLet's get loudÂ…'? The super glam quotient (SGQ) of the Federation Cup, the Zebras, had a reduction in their herd, seven were present out of the eight on Friday. The one missing had sprained her knee, during one of the dance-acts. A typical case of dance till you drop dead should we say? Asked to do their stuff, every time a goal is scored, the girls had a tough time realising it's a strike only when the ball goes in between the two goal posts. And not when it flies pasts the crossbar. On a couple of occasions, the sizzle troupe jumped up enthusiastically to the blaring music even when no goal was scored, only to sit down again much to the amusement of the crowd.

Vote for football

Goans love their football. Not only, is it evident on the playing field, but also on the streets of Goa too. So, what's new about that you may say? All and sundry know that football lives in the narrow lanes of this sun-kissed land. Well, listen to this. Goa is holding the municipal elections on the October 23. And traveling on the famed 'pilots', the motorcycle cabs, this scribe noticed more than a couple banners asking for votes, with football as the voting symbol. Now with the Federation Cup on, and football upmost on all's mind, a smart move that one would say. Trust politicians to be at their shrewdest best always.
