Ok, this is what I understand. Please correct if I am wrong.

Oliver pulls his shotgun and fires he rolls a 6 and succeeds on the hit. He
has a score of 11 and therefore makes his roll by 5. So this means that 5
shots hit out of the shell. Ok, how much damage is done to the target. Is it
1d+1 or 1d+1 x 5?

Shotguns, firing shot, use the "Rapid Fire" rules, page 373 of the
basic set. So a pump shutgun has a rate of fire of 2X9. That means
it can fire twice (two shells), each shot is treated as 9 attacks.
You roll to hit once for each shell, not for each shot. There's a
table on 373 that shows what the bonus to hit for multiple shots are,
and explains how to figure out how many of the attacks actually hit.
Each successful attack does the listed damage (1d+1 pi-, for a 12
gauge, Ithink).
