Not every world may have a GPS satellite set (or whatever occupies that niche) that would make a GPS receiver and an autopilot useful.
I'd consider GPS or equivelent a requirement for a TL8 world. A small colony might not have one; but anywhere with more than a few thousand people will. They might go for LORAN-like tech, which works well over smallish areas. A handfull of ground based transmitters will cover a radius of 1000 miles or more. The value of accurate postioning and distributed time-keeping is just too much to pass up on. Even if you don't have that, an autopilot, even if it only steers a compass bearing, makes conning a boat much less tiring, especially in any sort of weather, and gives you more time to look out and avoid things. If it can also keep a log of speed and direction, it's even more handy. (doing that is an essential navigation tool, so the helmsmen is going to have to do so, anyway, partiuclarly without GPS.) -- David Scheidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
