One of my current players [a mechanician-journeyman of the metal temple] in a magic light fantasy setting has a small shield with a mount for a carbide lamp - but lately a firework type- flare he can friction ignite.
I treated it as an affliction attack to blind, based off a QC between his DX and the opponents IQ/Per as relevant.
