If there are no patents, then what incentive does anyone have to do
anything? If you spend your time/energy/money developing a
product/idea/etc, and someone else can legally steal it the instant it
hits the market, what exactly was the point?
The same with for-profit. Why bother to develop the infrastructure to
deliver energy if you get nothing out of it? Better hope your society is
full of philanthropists. Otherwise it will have to be developed by the
government. If you see another way of this happening, I'd love to hear it.
