This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml Onno Meyer, 2009-08-31
Rangent Downport v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL7) Copyright 2009 by Onno Meyer Rangent Downport combines the functions of a surface starport, a major population center, and a planetary capital of the independent world. The Downport is a floating platform roughly 1 km by 1 km, anchored to the seabed near the equator below the geostationary Highport. Approaching starships see a mix of landing pads, buildings, fields and kitchen gardens. The industrial facilities, some hydroponics and most of the housing are down below the surface. The Downport has a shipyard (for watercraft, not spacecraft) and some supporting industries, in addition to the ubiquitous plankton processing plants which turn Rangent's basic food source into something that looks and tastes edible. The three primary landing pads are used for bulk freighters and cargo shuttles. Careful scheduling allows the heavy metal ingots to be loaded with a minimum of effort (and no destabilization of the floating port). Fifteen medium pads and fifty small pads are used for other starships and insystem shuttles. Pads for passenger shuttles are directly next to the bars and hostels frequented by off-duty belters, while the starship berths lead to brokers, ship chandlers, and refueling systems. The accommodations consist of 84,000 reconfigurable rooms for one, two or four occupants, each with a small bathroom and a tiny kitchen, and a thousand penthouse suites on top of the platform. Those who live in the interior bunkrooms can find fresh air in a hundred rooftop restaurants and bars. The port has heavy compartmentalization. The average population is 200,000.
