An other point to consider with dropships is, that they propably are not used exclusivly for delivering high end infantry to the battle.
They might also be used to evacuate civilians from civil war areas (like some western countries did with their citizens in some African civil wars). This suggests, that they also should have a mode of operations, that frail elderly people can survive, not only hardy troopers.
They might be used to deliver supplies to your side in a proxy war. That sort of mission likely will require more stealth then brawn.
Various sorts of mission could require aerial reconnaissance, bomber or fighter support, command centers and similiar. Drop shuttles that can double as something of that would have some apeal, though i don't know how effective multipurpose shuttles would be.
Depending on the last war the designers have fought, the dropships might be built for one of the other missions, and invasions by battlesuit troopers might be their secundary use.
