An other possiblity would be, that you actually fight in "olympic" spirit, where taking part is everything, and winning is not important.
Like there are thoose really powerfull aliens and they have hunger games like contests, only with large units rather then individual contestants. Sending units to the contests is handsomely rewarded. Performing well in them is, from Earths perspective, optional or propably not even desired, as it might create preasure to move Earth in a military role in that empire, rather then the cushy ecconomic one, it desires.
