mira instala un ubuntu y mira a ver si ves el /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

"xorg" debe resolver el asunto pero a veces la combinación tarjeta de

/etc/X11/???? yo siempre lo he visto ahí por defecto (en Debian Lenny
todavía está ahí y si mal no recuerdo en openSUSE 11.2 también), de
qué distro estás hablando?
