I found this after letting the system sit for at least 5 minutes, so it's not a matter of not giving windows enough time. I told windows to close down WE and things went fine after that; it rebooted and applied the updates. but during that time I had no speech, and wasn't able to start any going. anyone else have a shutdown that didn't seem to go correctly lately? maybe you had to power-cycle things to get past it? thanks.
