Hi Tony. You can set the alarm. One of the changes was the ability for the alarm to sound even if the BookSense is turned on.

Many thanks.

OK, I've had just a few minutes to work with the new firmware and overall I
like it but I do have one issue that maybe someone will know a work around.
I primarily use the book scence while I am working out and listening to a
book. I use several pieces of equipment and time myself on each. My issue is
right now it seems that the sleep timer is the only method of setting a time
and the problem is when it reaches the end of the time, the book scence
powers down. I then have to power it back up, turn on blue tooth, set
another time and off I go. This as you can see, is a pain. I would like it
if there was a separate timer that just notified you when the end of the
time was reached so then you could just push a button and set another time
and your ready to go.
I realize that the Book Scence can't do everything and if there isn't a work
around, I'll just continue to use my Iphone for reading books and put the
Book Scence back in it's resting place.
