I am assuming it uses the files' ID tags. I don't know that for
sure. When you add files, you browse to the folder where the files
you want to merge are, open that folder, and select all the files by
pressing ctrl-A. The prompts are straight forward. All I know is, it works.

You could use a program called, MP3 Merge to merge those files into one
file. I don't have the link for it, but I am sure someone on list does.
The software is easy to use.
