I've just experienced the exact same issue, and my scripting status is
set to "on."

kit script. I installed it using the same script as I have others.
It said it had to turn off all active scripts to install and would
turn them back on afterwards. At that point, speech vanished and
after waiting a respectable amount of time, I closed and re-opened
window eyes. All worked fine at that point. I'm Running XP home
service pack 3. Don't know if this reflects a problem or anomaly,
but figured I should mention it.
