Hi. I don't have any numbers to backup what I'm saying, however the difference is definitely noticeable. A good example is typing at the run dialog box. As you type in the edit box, the response from the keyboard is instant when you use the virtual synthesizer whereas the response from the remote synthesizer has a big of lag. Also, the quality of the sound can fluctuate because of the audio being sent over the pipe.

Hope this helps.

If you do not use WE to connect remotely to an office or similar remote
facility, kindly disregard this message.
As you know, WE can connect remotely using either of two Citrix options
(actually there are other variations too, but let's keep this simple). Those
are remote synthesizer and virtual synthesizer.
Our IS department has been able to get remote synthesizer to work tolerably
well, though perhaps not ideal for daily, thin client use.
Probably because of security settings, our IS Department has had difficulty in
getting the virtual synthesizer to work. I understand that the principal
difference between the two is that the remote synthesizer sends at least some
components of the sound through the remote connection while the virtual
synthesizer just sends text which the local copy of WE picks up and turns into
speech.
It stands to reason that the virtual synthesizer would be more responsive.
What I don't know and would like to learn, for purposes of communicating with
our IS Department, is how much more responsive the virtual synthesizer is.
It would be useful to get feedback from actual users.
If the difference is slight, then I will just have to accept that thin client
mode just isn't workable on our system (Our IS Department spent months trying
to get JAWS to work).
If, however, the virtual synthesizer is significantly more responsive
(responsive enough to make thin client practical, so long as there is a fast
connection), then I would feel justified in pressing our IS Department further.
I would also like to visit with anyone who would like to share their triumph
and woes in the world of thin client or remote connectivity.
Thanks!
