fyi,
it's been my experience with Vista, if a hardware device is removed or
disabled in the bios, it won't even show up in the device manager of
vista. I think this is because drivers aren't loading for it, but I'm
not really sure why.
Although others haven't duplicated this exactly, my laptop has a
physical switch that allows me to turn the power off to all radios.
when I do this they disappear from the device manager completely as if
they were never there. My bluetooth headphones will show up in the
device manager when in use, and disappear when switched off.

Hi,
if you go to "System" in control panel, find "Hardware", tab
down to "Device Manager", tab down to "Hardware", arrow down to "Sound,
video and game controllers" and open it you can arrow through to see if
your integrated sound card is listed. If it is, you should be able to
enable it. If it is not, then it is disabled in the Bios.
