Could you try the dectalk speech and let us know if this helps.  It is
possible that the new version is using more ram then your system has to
spair.  Considering the fact you have the 6.1 cd you could use the sapi
version of eloquence.  That might be more responsive.  I think we should
really get to figuring out what your problem is verses just having you use
the older version.  As time goes buy you will find that there is more and
more that you are going to need an updated screen reader to perform tasks.
