David, this is what the icon which appears in your systray is for. it's labeled something like "safely remove removable media". when you click on it, it tries to complete the flush, and then tells you if anyone still has the device in use.

This means, that when you send the files, they are bufferd, and, when Windows is not 'as busy', later on, the files are actually being written to the physical drive. I know, from the old DOS days, there was a 'flush' function, that would ensure the files were written immediately, without buffering, or even would empty whatever was in the buffer, onto the drive. Allright, DOS is gone, no more to think about. But is there a way - standard, or via some kind of third-party software - to accomplish such an emptyijng of the write-buffer in Windows?
