1. BookSense: The BookSense is the newest hand-held device to play downloaded books from NLS (National Library Service). This class will cover the procedure for signing up to participate in the NLS download program. We will also cover selecting and downloading books and navigating a book with the BookSense. The instructor will also explore the saving of materials in a very easy to understand file structure.
This class will also cover: Using MS-Word doc and docx files directly with teachers and others. Well also look at direct mp3 recording of class materials, which can be input through the line-in or microphone and immediately shared with other pc(s) and portable devices.
Well touch on Audible, Over-Drive and other sources of info and music such as ITunes. Well look at the relationship between this unit and digital rights managed materials and the use of a clock chip to make these tasks possible. Well also check out the talking clock and alarms built-in to the unit.
2. Braille Sense Plus: The Braille Sense Plus is one of the most advanced Windows teaching (Braille output) tools used by classroom students today with its ability to do word processing, e-mail, surf the Internet, and read books with its built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. It is essential that we teach our kids and others the Windows environment so they can make transition to more mainstream technology and they are not caught in a technology ghetto. Your instructor will cover some of the basic setup features of the Braille Sense Plus explaining the use of the built-in video screen and the ability to connect it directly to a large monitor.
Well also look at the option to reverse the video screen and use a Bluetooth QWERTY keyboard to provide direct deaf/blind communication without more equipment and expense.
3. Ask the Experts: During lunch you will have the opportunity to ask questions of your instructors, Mike Ellis and Steve Pollo concerning the information covered in the morning sessions or adaptive technology in general. Mr. Jeremy Curry of GW Micro will be present to answer questions from the national distributors perspective.
