Using the laptop layout, alt-arrows are defined as Window-Eyes hot keys. This is why alt-left arrow does not work. So you either need to bypass with insert-b then alt-left arrow, or you need to undefine that hot key, or you need to switch to the desktop layout. On my various laptops I've used over the years, the desktop layout was just as easy on the laptop as on a desktop and so I've not used the laptop layout much because of these key conflicts.
