Okay, well I'm using thunderbird 3.0 and I haven't found it a mistake thus far 
nor have I encountered many of the problems you mentioned below but I did have 
a problem where I couldn't get around the windows so someone suggested that I 
go into the Options and make sure that the option which allows new messages to 
open in new windows was checked, can't remember exactly where that option is 
right now, will look it up later.

Also make sure Thunderbird 3.0 is in "Classic" view and use the f6 key to 
toggle between panes.
